The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to sustaining and strengthening its support for the National Defence College (NDC), Abuja, as part of efforts to enhance national security.
Lieutenant General Shaibu gave the assurance on Monday, 5 January 2026, while receiving the Commandant of the National Defence College, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, who paid a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters.
The Army Chief stressed that strong strategic partnerships remain critical to addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges, noting that the NDC occupies a key position in training personnel drawn from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), in addition to members of the Armed Forces. He described the ongoing efforts by the Commandant to review and strengthen the College’s curriculum as timely and commendable.
According to the COAS, improved training and capacity building across both military and civilian institutions are central to safeguarding the nation. He observed that national security has gone beyond the exclusive responsibility of the Armed Forces and other security agencies, underscoring the need for an inclusive and adaptive curriculum that reflects emerging concepts and involves critical government institutions.
Earlier, the Commandant of the National Defence College, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, praised the COAS for his proactive leadership and firm handling of security challenges nationwide. He said the changing nature of threats confronting the country had made it necessary for the College to continuously adjust and modernise its curriculum.
Rear Admiral Ahmed also sought the COAS’s guidance, drawing on his experience as a former student and Directing Staff at the institution. He further expressed appreciation to the COAS and other Service Chiefs for their sustained support to the National Defence College.
