The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has declared all custodial centres across the country as Red Zones ahead of the planned nationwide protest scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, calling for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, warned that correctional facilities remain restricted and sensitive areas, cautioning members of the public to stay away to avoid any security breaches or confrontation with law enforcement agencies.
Abubakar stressed that the declaration became necessary to ensure the safety of the facilities, inmates, and staff, as well as to prevent any attempt by miscreants to take advantage of the protest to cause disruptions.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service reiterates that correctional centres are restricted areas, and anyone who has no official business therein should stay off to avoid any untoward incident or security breach,” the statement read.
He urged citizens to exercise restraint and cooperate with security agencies to ensure peace and safety during the planned demonstration, adding that it is important to respect all restricted areas, particularly correctional facilities.
“It is important for all Nigerians to exercise caution, respect restricted areas such as correctional facilities, and work collectively with security agencies to maintain a peaceful environment,” Abubakar said.
The Service reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and assured the public that adequate measures have been put in place to safeguard all correctional centres across the country.
