Cross River Assembly impeaches Elvert Ayambem as speaker

The Cross River State House of Assembly Speaker, Hon. Elvert Anyambem, has been impeached.

The Speaker was impeached on Wednesday by 17 members of the house over allegations of misappropriation of funds.

The impeachment motion was moved by Hon. Effiom Ekarika representing Calabar South 1 Constituency and seconded by Hon. Omang Charles Omang representing Bekwarra State Constituency.

As of Tuesday, over 20 members had signed up for his impeachment before the motion was moved at the house floor on Wednesday.

After impeaching him, the mace was taken away by the members.

Rt Hon Elvert Ayambem was elected Speaker of the 10th Cross River State House of Assembly in June 2023.

Ayambem represents Ikom 2 State Constituency in the Houses of Assembly.

The development comes amid the political crisis in Rivers which has divided the state assembly with some supporting the incumbent governor Sim Fubara while others pitch their loyalty to the immediate past Governor Nyesom Wike.
