As the race for the next Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) intensifies,a civil society organization, under the aegis of Ethics and Compliance Officers Association of Africa – ECOA has called on President Bola Tinubu to prioritize transparency, accountability, and integrity in the selection process. The group strongly endorsed Afolabi Idowu Omoniwa, described him as the most qualified candidate for the position.
In a statement signed by its Convener,Prof Babatunde Akinsanya,who is also the Executive Secretary, the CSO emphasized the need to scrutinize all candidates thoroughly to avoid any controversy that could tarnish the image of Tinubu’s administration.
“From our findings after a deep assessment of the contenders, Afolabi Idowu stands out as the most competent. He is a seasoned accountant with vast experience in public sector finance, having risen through the ranks with an impeccable record,” the statement read.
The group noted that Afolabi has spent over two decades managing government finances across various ministries and agencies without any blemish, making him the ideal candidate to oversee the nation’s financial records.
The CSO further urged President Tinubu to be cautious of candidates with questionable backgrounds, stressed that the position of Accountant General requires an individual with an untainted reputation.
Additionally, the group pointed out the importance of regional balance in key appointments, stated that with the Minister of Finance coming from another geopolitical zone, appointing Afolabi from North Central Nigeria would ensure fairness and national unity.
“Afolabi fits the bill, and there is no need for Mr. President to look elsewhere for an Accountant General. His track record speaks for itself,” the statement concluded.
As the selection process progresses, stakeholders continue to watch closely, awaiting President Tinubu’s decision on this critical appointment.
