The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing border security through the adoption of advanced technology in a bid to curb smuggling, trafficking, and other transborder crimes.
This was disclosed by the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, during a courtesy visit to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, on Thursday, 6th March 2025, in Abuja.
During the visit, CGC Adeniyi highlighted the Service’s deployment of Geospatial technology to boost surveillance, intelligence gathering, and enforcement across Nigeria’s land and maritime borders.
“Technology remains the key to effective border management in today’s rapidly evolving security landscape. The Nigeria Customs Service is committed to deploying Geospatial technology and other innovative tools to enhance our surveillance, intelligence gathering, and enforcement capabilities. These efforts are designed to align with international best practices while addressing Nigeria’s unique border security challenges,” CGC Adeniyi stated.
He further explained that the technology-driven approach would not only curb illicit trade but also facilitate seamless and legitimate cross-border transactions.
In his response, the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, commended the Customs Service for its proactive approach to border security and trade facilitation.
“The Customs Service has demonstrated a commendable commitment to modernisation and efficiency in securing our borders. Integrating advanced technology into border management is a step in the right direction and aligns perfectly with our broader national security objectives,” Ribadu remarked.
The meeting emphasised the importance of inter-agency collaboration in addressing security threats and safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity. The NSA assured the CGC of continued support, stressing the need for intelligence sharing and operational synergy to strengthen the country’s security architecture.
