The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Western Marine Command (WMC), has intercepted a major consignment of Cannabis Sativa worth N107,205,000.00 along the Ajido waterways in Lagos State.
The operation, which took place on December 16, 2024, led to the seizure of 15 sacks containing 1,021 loaves of the illicit substance weighing 538kg. According to a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SC Magaji Mailafiya, the smugglers abandoned their boat and fled upon sighting Customs officers.
Despite the challenging terrain, the Patrol Team secured the sacks, transported them using official patrol boats, and delivered them to the Command’s Headquarters for further investigation.
The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Paul Bamisaiye, commended the officers for their vigilance and reaffirmed the Command’s readiness to protect the nation’s waterways, particularly during the festive season.
The WMC has recorded several successes in recent times, including the interception of arms, ammunition, and various contraband worth billions of naira. Notably, the Command recently dismantled a smuggling syndicate attempting to move illegal goods through the Badagry waterways. These efforts are part of the broader mission of the NCS to secure the country’s borders against threats to national security and economic stability.
Comptroller Bamisaiye also issued a stern warning to smugglers, urging them to desist from illegal activities. “The Command will not relent in its efforts to apprehend those who attempt to compromise the nation’s security and economic integrity. We also appeal to members of the public to provide timely information that can assist in our operations. Together, we can ensure a safe and secure environment for all,” he stated.
The Customs boss credited the support of the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, and his management team for equipping the Command with the resources necessary to combat smuggling.
