The Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, Jens Ole Bach, on Friday, 5 December 2025, paid a courtesy visit to the Naval Headquarters in Abuja to advance discussions on strengthening defence and maritime cooperation between Nigeria and Denmark. The meeting focused on deepening collaboration on anti-piracy operations, information sharing, capacity development, and regional maritime stability across the Gulf of Guinea.
Receiving the envoy, the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas represented by the Director of Plans, Rear Admiral Madumom Ide commended Denmark’s longstanding partnership with Nigeria in promoting maritime safety. He noted that both countries share strategic interests in safeguarding vital sea lines of communication and ensuring secure maritime trade routes that support economic development.
Rear Admiral Ide explained that enhanced cooperation with Denmark would significantly reinforce Nigeria’s maritime security architecture while contributing to broader regional security objectives. He acknowledged the Danish government’s consistent support, particularly in the areas of professional training, operational exchanges, and joint efforts to combat piracy and other maritime crimes.
He also expressed confidence that the renewed engagement would pave the way for a more structured and enduring framework for collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and the Royal Danish Navy. According to him, such a framework would improve joint operational readiness, strengthen technical capacity, and foster more effective coordination in addressing emerging maritime threats.
The Director of Plans assured Ambassador Bach of the Nigerian Navy’s full commitment to sustaining and expanding the partnership, stressing that Nigeria is determined to maintain a safe maritime environment across the Gulf of Guinea—an essential factor for regional peace and economic growth.
Ambassador Bach, in his remarks, reaffirmed Denmark’s willingness to work closely with Nigeria to enhance maritime security cooperation, noting that the Gulf of Guinea remains a region of strategic importance to global shipping.
The visit mark another step in the ongoing effort by both nations to strengthen defence ties and reinforce collective security mechanisms in the region.
