Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has condemned in the strongest terms the recent massacre in Otukpo Local Government Area, Benue State, following an attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
The former Senate President in a statement signed by his Special Adviser Paul Mumeh, expressed his outrage over the brutal assault on the Otobi-Akpa, Emichi, and Utonkon communities, which left no fewer than 15 people dead.
The attack occurred on Tuesday night, with widespread violence and destruction reported across the affected areas.
Senator Mark voiced his deep concern over the frequency of such attacks, called the assault a premeditated and organized act. He stated that the ongoing violence, which has claimed innocent lives, must be halted immediately.
Mark further called on local communities to organize vigilante groups to prevent future invasions. “It is time to put an end to these senseless killings. Security operatives must rise to the challenge and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he emphasized.
The former Senate President also stressed the importance of distinguishing between legitimate residents and invaders, urged the people to protect their communities while cooperating with security forces. He added that while the people of Benue State should continue to be accommodating, their safety and security must be prioritized.
Senator Mark therefore commiserated with the families of the victims and prayed for the eternal rest of the deceased. He urged calm and cooperation with security forces as efforts to restore peace and order in the troubled communities continue.
