The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has joined other prominent Nigerians in mourning the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday at the age of 82.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Senator Barau described the late leader as a towering figure in Nigeria’s political history, who dedicated his life to the unity, peace, and development of the country.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. I mourn the passing of the former President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died today (Sunday) in London,” the statement read.
Senator Barau highlighted Buhari’s contributions both as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, saying he left a legacy defined by discipline, resilience, and patriotism.
“President Buhari was not just a towering figure in our nation’s history but a man whose life embodied discipline, resilience, and patriotism. Throughout his lifetime, he was committed to Nigeria’s unity, security and development. He served with honour in both military and civilian leadership, and history will remember him for his efforts to reshape our nation’s trajectory,” Senator Barau said.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the former president’s soul and extended his condolences to the late president’s widow, Her Excellency Aisha Buhari, his children, and the entire Buhari family.
“May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus. I offer condolences to his beloved wife, Her Excellency Aisha Buhari, the children, and all the family members. May Allah SWT give them the strength to bear this irreparable loss, Amin,” he prayed.
President Muhammadu Buhari died after a prolonged illness and had been receiving treatment in a London clinic. His death has continued to draw reactions from across the country and beyond.
