The Edo City Transport Service (ECTS) has announced plans to revive its inter-state transit operations at government-subsidized rates, aiming to alleviate the high transportation costs affecting residents.
The Managing Director, Barr. Festus Ehimua, revealed this during a media briefing, highlighting ongoing efforts to restore and expand the agency’s services.
Ehimua noted that the state government, under Governor Monday Okpebholo, is prioritizing the welfare of its citizens by addressing transportation challenges exacerbated by the removal of fuel subsidies. “We inherited eight grounded Hiace buses and have already sent two for repairs. We anticipate resuming inter-state services by the end of February,” he stated.
The MD further disclosed that Governor Okpebholo has committed to purchasing new buses, including Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) models, to reduce operational costs and provide affordable transit options. “The governor’s initiative is aimed at reducing the cost of living, with transportation being a critical area of focus,” Ehimua added.
Since assuming office, Ehimua has spearheaded efforts to revitalize ECTS, increasing the number of operational buses from 12 to over 30. He assured residents that more buses would be restored and deployed to serve additional routes within Benin City and beyond.
The introduction of CNG buses is expected to further decrease transportation costs, providing economic relief to commuters. Ehimua commended the state government’s road improvement projects, which will enable ECTS to offer more extensive and reliable services.
Commuters and ECTS staff have praised the management’s efforts, expressed optimism about the agency’s revitalization and the positive impact on their daily lives.
