The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticized the factional Caretaker Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), accused it of attempting to destabilize the State with baseless allegations and inflammatory rhetoric.
In a statement signed by the APC State Chairman, Jarret Tenebe, the party described the PDP’s accusations of “lawlessness” and “extermination of constitutional democracy” against Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration as unfounded and defamatory.
The APC defended the recent suspension of local government chairmen and vice chairmen by the Edo State House of Assembly, stating that the move was necessary to ensure accountability and maintain public order. “Governor Okpebholo has a constitutional mandate to uphold the law and protect the interests of the people,” the statement read.
Citing the PDP’s controversial past under former Governor Godwin Obaseki, the APC alleged that the PDP ignored constitutional violations and financial misconduct during its tenure. “The Obaseki-led administration refused to swear in 14 out of 24 elected House members for four years and demolished opposition properties despite valid court orders,” the APC noted.
The statement also accused the PDP of using suspended local government officials to fund its governorship tribunal case, alleging that corruption at the grassroots level had been curtailed by recent actions taken by the State legislature and councillors.
“The people of Edo State are not deceived by the PDP’s desperate attempts to regain relevance,” the APC said, added that Governor Okpebholo’s administration remains committed to transparency and the rule of law.
The APC therefore called on anti-graft agencies to recover funds allegedly embezzled under previous PDP administrations and urged citizens to support the government’s efforts to ensure accountability at all levels.
