The Coordinator, Office of the First Lady of Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has called for urgent reforms in laws protecting women and children, stressing the need for swift justice in cases of abuse and violence.
She made this appeal while receiving a delegation from the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) at the Office of the First Lady, Government House, Benin City.
Mrs. Anani commended FIDA for its efforts and emphasized the importance of collaborative strategies to address challenges affecting women and children in the state. She assured the organization of her commitment to supporting initiatives that promote women’s empowerment and gender equality.
“Many of our laws need to be reviewed, as some are ineffective. Justice delayed is justice denied. For instance, the case of the Okpella girl who was raped on December 24, 2024, is still pending. Such cases should be expedited,” she stated.
Speaking during the meeting, the FIDA Edo State Chairperson, Mrs. Francisca Elema, appreciated the First Lady’s dedication to the welfare of Edo State citizens. She highlighted that, as outlined in Section 27 of the FIDA Constitution, the Chief Judge, the Wife of the Governor, and the Attorney General serve as honorary Patrons and Matrons of the organization.
Mrs. Elema reiterated FIDA’s commitment to protecting vulnerable women and children through legal frameworks. However, she also pointed out key challenges facing the organization, including unfinished infrastructure, non-functional vehicles, and funding constraints. She appealed to Her Excellency for support in addressing these challenges.
While responding, Mrs. Anani reassured the delegation of Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo’s strong commitment to safeguarding the rights of women and children, pledging that the government would take all necessary steps to ensure their protection.
Similarly, the First Lady welcomed a delegation from the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), led by Hajiya Audu Usenat Esohe. The group sought collaboration in combating gender-based violence and empowering women.
Mrs. Anani expressed her full support, emphasized the importance of unity, solidarity, and peace in advancing the welfare of women and children across the state.
