The Edo State Government has commenced the cultivation of 3,000 hectares of farmlands across the three senatorial districts as part of its efforts to enhance food security and economic growth.
Governor Monday Okpebholo, who embarked on an inspection tour of the state-owned cultivated farmlands in Iguoriakhi, Ovia South West Local Government Area, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to large-scale farming. The initiative aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes food sufficiency nationwide.
During the visit, the Governor was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Osagie Peter, who provided an update on the progress of the project.
Governor Okpebholo noted that the farming initiative, which has already commenced with 60 hectares (148 acres) in Edo South, will be replicated in Edo Central and Edo North to ensure widespread agricultural development.
“We have embarked on a drive to embrace agriculture as a means to grow and develop Edo’s economy. This is the second time I have entered the bush to ensure we produce food for our people. We have already cleared a large portion of land, and we are ready to clear more. Our target is 3,000 hectares across the state,” Okpebholo stated.
He assured farmers of the government’s support to enhance productivity and ensure a successful farming season.
On his part, Dr. Osagie Peter highlighted that the government’s Iguoriakhi Farm Settlement, which spans approximately 2,350 hectares, has a significant portion dedicated to permanent crops such as oil palm and rubber. He further disclosed that about 250 farm heads will benefit from the first phase of the initiative.
“We have cleared 60 hectares, ready for tractorization. By the time this is completed, each farm group will receive about five hectares. This project will accommodate 250 active farm heads and significantly contribute to food security in Edo South and beyond,” he said.
The Governor and his entourage also visited the Benin Owena River Basin Development Authority Integrated Farm at Obayantor in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area to assess further agricultural projects in the state.
The Edo State Government’s large-scale farming initiative is expected to enhance food production, create employment, and support the Federal Government’s drive for agricultural sustainability.
