The Edo State Government has strongly refuted claims made by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), describing recent allegations against Governor Monday Okpebholo as baseless, malicious, and inciting.
In a press statement issued on Thursday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, the state government dismissed IPOB’s claim that Governor Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” and betrayed the people of Edo State.
“The figures and narrative being peddled are fictitious, malicious, and deliberately misleading,” the statement read. “The Edo State Government has not and will not compensate any individual or group involved in acts of terror or criminality.”
Itua accused IPOB, which has been designated a terrorist organization by the Federal Government, of attempting to distort facts and incite ethnic tension within the state. He emphasized that the government of Governor Okpebholo remains committed to justice, unity, and the safety of all citizens, regardless of ethnic or religious affiliation.
“The baseless allegation that the Governor handed over vigilantes to ‘Fulani authorities’ is not only a ridiculous lie but an affront to the memory of security personnel who serve Edo State with honour,” the statement added.
The Edo Government warned against attempts by IPOB to “export its terrorist ideology” into the state and urged security agencies to investigate and bring to justice those behind the inciting publication.
“The good people of Edo State are known for their unity, hospitality, and progressive values,We reject IPOB’s attempts to use blood-stained rhetoric to cause unrest in our land.”the statement read.
The government reaffirmed its focus on peace, inclusive governance, and development, stated that it would not be distracted by “criminals masquerading as freedom fighters.”
