The Edo State Government has received commendation from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for its proactive initiatives in tackling illegal migration and gender-based violence (GBV). This recognition came during a courtesy visit by the Head of the IOM Sub-office in Benin City, Arshad Rashid Khan, and his team to the Edo State Government House in Benin City.
Speaking during the visit, the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to leveraging its diplomatic and economic ties with the IOM to create more opportunities for Edo youths.
“I commend the IOM for its dedication to addressing illegal migration and other social issues. Under the leadership of His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, we assure you of even stronger cooperation. The Governor is passionate about youth empowerment and humanitarian initiatives, and IOM will find a strong partner in Edo State,” Mrs. Anani stated.
She also applauded the IOM’s plan to establish a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Center in Uromi, Edo Central, in addition to the existing facility in Benin City.
“I appreciate your efforts to expand support services for survivors of gender-based violence. The Benin Center has been impactful, and setting up another in Uromi will improve access and reduce transportation costs for those in need,” she added.
The IOM Head of Sub-office, Arshad Rashid Khan, praised the Edo State Government for its ongoing efforts in tackling illegal migration and providing protection for vulnerable groups. He noted that the IOM remains committed to collaborating with the state, particularly in areas of migration management, human trafficking prevention, and support for survivors of GBV.
Khan further highlighted IOM’s existing partnership with the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs in setting up a Referral Center for Gender-Based Violence in Uromi, reinforcing the shared commitment to safeguarding the rights of women and youths in the state.
The visit reaffirmed the strong partnership between the Edo State Government and IOM, with both parties expressed readiness to deepen collaborations in addressing migration challenges and providing sustainable solutions for vulnerable populations.
