In a groundbreaking move to boost aviation development, the Edo State Government has partnered with an aviation company to set up a light aircraft assembly plant and training center in Benin City.
The collaboration, aimed at assembling aircraft and training Edo citizens as mechanics, pilots, and other aviation professionals, was flagged off at the Benin Airport by Governor Monday Okpebholo. The governor was joined by his Chief of Staff, Gani Audu, and other top government officials.
Highlighting the significance of the event, Governor Okpebholo participated in a test flight of a light aircraft, describing the experience as both exciting and promising for the state’s future.
Speaking after the test flight, Governor Okpebholo said, “This marks the beginning of a new era for Edo people. During my campaign, I promised to bring development to Edo State, and this initiative is proof of our commitment. The assembly plant will train our children, create jobs, and significantly reduce unemployment.”
The Governor pledged full support for the aviation company, emphasized the alignment of the project with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He added that all three senatorial districts in Edo State would benefit from the initiative.
Ehis Odia, CEO of the aviation company, praised the Governor’s visionary leadership, describing the partnership as essential to advancing aviation in Edo State.
“We are proud to make Edo the first state in Nigeria where aircraft will be assembled. This project will not only train pilots and mechanics but also encourage aero-clubs in schools, making aviation education accessible to young people,” Odia stated.
The company planned to involve secondary and technical schools in aviation training, broadening the scope beyond universities to ensure grassroots participation.
Pilot of the plan ,Donovan Lombard said“We are bringing aviation into a region that lacks significant infrastructure for it. This initiative will make transportation more effective and accessible in Edo State.”
The project is expected to create numerous opportunities, attract investments, and position Edo State as a leader in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
