The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebhbolo, has expressed profound grief over the death of General Godwin Osagie Abbe, a renowned military officer, statesman, and proud son of Edo State. General Abbe passed away on Saturday night in Abuja after a prolonged illness.
Born on January 10, 1949, General Abbe was just weeks away from celebrating his 75th birthday. His illustrious career in the Nigerian Army began in 1967 when he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He rose through the ranks, serving in pivotal roles such as Battalion Commander, Instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy, and Staff Officer Grade I.
General Abbe’s public service extended beyond the military. He served as Military Governor of Akwa Ibom State (1988-1990) and later as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence and Internal Affairs, leaving a legacy of excellence and commitment to national development.
In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebhbolo described General Abbe as a “shining star” whose contributions to Edo State and Nigeria would never be forgotten.
“General Godwin Osagie Abbe was a symbol of discipline, dedication, and selfless service. His passing is a significant loss not only to Edo State but to the entire nation. We celebrate his life, his legacy, and his unwavering commitment to the ideals of unity and progress,” the Governor said.
The Governor extended heartfelt condolences to the Abbe family, the people of Edo State, and Nigerians at large, urging all to reflect on the values the late General exemplified.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
