Journalists have been encouraged to strengthen their welfare and workplace conditions by fully embracing collective bargaining and unionism.
Delivering the keynote address at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Correspondents’ Chapel End-of-Year Party in Abuja, the Founder of Hope Raisers Global Foundation, Amb. Angonimi David-Umeh, said welfare remained the backbone of both union activities and effective negotiations.
Speaking on the theme “Opportunities for Collective Bargaining and Unionization: The Place of Welfare,” she noted that collective bargaining provides journalists with a unified voice capable of securing fair pay, safer work environments, and career-enhancing opportunities.
“Welfare is not a luxury. It is what keeps productivity alive,” she stressed, adding that organized labour in Nigeria has achieved significant reforms through unified negotiation gains journalists can also enjoy if they stand together.
Representing the NUJ FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, Vice Chairman Comrade Yahaya Ndambabo commended the Correspondents’ Chapel for its steadfast commitment to the welfare and dignity of journalists, urging stronger unity within the profession.
Earlier, the Correspondents’ Chapel Chairman, Mr. Felix Ojo, highlighted the Chapel’s numerous trainings and advocacy engagements in 2025, while calling on governments to support journalists who work under challenging conditions yet often remain excluded from welfare interventions.
The event also featured the presentation of Certificates of Commendation and Awards to outstanding members and partners.
