Renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has issued a stern warning to the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, over a recent threat directed at Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
Falana’s response followed remarks made by Governor Okpebholo at a political rally in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area. The governor allegedly stated: “There’s a new sheriff in town. [Peter Obi] cannot just come into Edo without informing me. His security will not be guaranteed. If anything happens to him here, he will have himself to blame. I’m not joking.”
In a statement released Sunday, Falana condemned the remarks, described them as unconstitutional and a threat to the right to life, peace, and freedom of movement as guaranteed under Nigerian and international law.
“The threat to Mr. Peter Obi’s life by the so-called ‘new sheriff in town’ contravene Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights,” Falana said.
He further cited Section 14(2)(b) of the Constitution, which places the security and welfare of the people as the primary purpose of government. Falana called on the governor to issue a public apology and assure Peter Obi’s safety in Edo State.
Falana also advised Obi to file a suit at the Federal High Court in Benin should the governor failed to retract the statement, stressing the urgency of the matter in light of widespread mob violence and extrajudicial killings in Nigeria.
“Mr. Obi should act with utmost urgency,” Falana urged.
