The Federal Government of Nigeria has formally adopted the National Energy Transition Policy (NETP), reinforcing its commitment to a cleaner, greener, and inclusive energy future that targets net-zero carbon emissions by 2060.
This was announced by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, during the NEITI Retreat and Board Meeting held in Abia State. Akume, who also chairs the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) Board, described the policy as a “strategic blueprint” for achieving an environmentally sustainable energy landscape.
He emphasized the need for a balanced, evidence-based approach that integrates climate goals with Nigeria’s core priorities revenue protection, job security, energy access, and equity for all citizens, particularly rural and vulnerable communities.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has embraced the NETP as a roadmap to a low-carbon economy without leaving anyone behind,” Akume stated in a release sent to The ICIR.
The retreat featured strategic reviews of NEITI’s operational direction, including its ongoing research on the economic impact of energy transition, partnerships with subnational governments, and policy alignment with NEITI’s Five-Year Strategic Plan.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State commended NEITI’s efforts in driving reforms and data transparency. He noted the state’s readiness to align with the policy direction through the launch of ABTAN Energy Ltd, a joint venture with PETAN and private investors aimed at responsibly managing oil and gas resources.
Otti stressed that ABTAN would adopt NEITI’s reporting framework to ensure host communities are not excluded, adding, “Poverty and wealth are shaped by how natural resources are harnessed. NEITI’s work is helping to reset Nigeria’s governance of extractives.”
NEITI Executive Secretary, Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, described the retreat as timely, given the global shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy. He noted the transition presents both challenges and opportunities, urging collaboration backed by credible data and reforms.
On the global front, EITI Africa Regional Director, Gilbert Makore, applauded NEITI’s consistency and Nigeria’s leadership in extractive industry transparency. He reaffirmed EITI’s support for Nigeria’s transition efforts.
The NETP, originally launched in August 2022, served as Nigeria’s national roadmap for addressing climate change, energy poverty, and inclusive development in line with global best practices.
