The Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, on Monday, 14th July 2025, received a delegation from the European Union (EU) led by the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Gautier Mignot, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
The EU delegation visited the Ministry as a follow-up to its recent trip to Benue State, with a focus on providing support for victims in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and addressing the growing food crisis across the North East and North West regions of the country.
During the meeting, both parties discussed strategic ways to respond more effectively to the humanitarian challenges. They agreed to form a dedicated task force to improve coordination and define clear roles and responsibilities. The need for a swift review of the budget to enable timely action was emphasized, alongside efforts to simplify the waiver process for essential supplies, in order to eliminate supply chain delays that hamper aid delivery.
The meeting also underscored the importance of a comprehensive assessment of the current food situation, with the possibility of involving ECOWAS and other relevant bodies. In addition, they explored avenues for the international community to complement the efforts of the federal and state governments in responding to the food crisis.
Professor Yilwatda reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable Nigerians and praised the EU for its consistent engagement and humanitarian assistance.
Ambassador Mignot, in his remarks, assured the Minister of the EU’s willingness to strengthen collaboration with Nigeria in addressing urgent humanitarian and food security concerns.
The discussions marked a significant move toward eliminating bureaucratic bottlenecks, streamlining aid efforts, and leveraging international partnerships to ease the humanitarian burden in the country.
