The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on its 80th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming its commitment to deepen bilateral ties and expand areas of cooperation with the Southeast Asian nation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, conveyed warm felicitations to Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Bùi Thanh Sơn.
He described the anniversary as a testament to the resilience, unity, and determination of the Vietnamese people in their pursuit of sovereignty, peace, and national development.
Nigeria and Vietnam established diplomatic relations in 1976 during Vietnam’s struggle for reunification, which was further reinforced in 2007 with the opening of diplomatic missions in each other’s capitals. Since then, the two nations have built stronger partnerships in trade, agriculture, investment, education, and multilateral diplomacy.
As of the last quarter of 2024, trade between Nigeria and Vietnam stood at about $1 billion, making Vietnam one of Nigeria’s key economic partners in Asia. Both countries also work closely within the United Nations and other international platforms to promote global peace, sustainable development, and South-South cooperation.
On this auspicious occasion, Nigeria pledged to explore new areas of partnership and foster stronger people-to-people ties for the mutual benefit of both countries.
