The Federal Government has commenced the distribution of Presidential Emergency Food and Nutrition Items in Katsina State as part of ongoing humanitarian efforts to address food insecurity and support vulnerable populations across the country.
The initiative, led by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, was officially flagged off on Thursday at the People’s Square, New Government House, Katsina.
Representing the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, the Honourable Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Hon. Tijani Aliyu Ahmed, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to providing protection, care, and durable solutions for displaced persons nationwide.
He noted that the intervention forms part of broader federal efforts aimed at supporting internally displaced persons and vulnerable households through resettlement programmes, skills acquisition initiatives, and agricultural support designed to restore livelihoods.
Ahmed further emphasized that the Federal Government would continue to collaborate with state governments, humanitarian partners, and local communities to reduce hardship, strengthen social protection systems, and promote sustainable recovery among vulnerable Nigerians.
Delivering a welcome address on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya, the Director of Finance and Accounts, Munkaila Mohammed, described the intervention as a compassionate response to rising food insecurity driven by conflict, displacement, climate pressures, and economic challenges. He explained that beyond immediate relief, the programme is structured to serve as a bridge toward recovery and long-term resilience.
The intervention, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, underscores the administration’s commitment to ensuring that vulnerable citizens receive necessary support during periods of hardship.
Speaking on behalf of Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda, the Deputy Governor, Faruk Lawal Jobe, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for the timely intervention. He disclosed that more than 6,000 beneficiaries including internally displaced persons, migrants, and vulnerable households would receive food items, medical supplies, and nutritional support, particularly targeting malnourished children.
Traditional and community leaders, including the Emir of Katsina, Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, represented at the event, commended the initiative and called for transparency and fairness in the distribution process.
Prior to the flag-off ceremony, the federal delegation led by Ahmed paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Katsina, visited Kofar Kaure Primary Healthcare Hospital where drugs were distributed, and also met with the Deputy Governor as part of stakeholder engagement activities.
Beneficiaries of the programme include vulnerable households across the state, while public health institutions also received medical supplies for onward distribution.
The event attracted government officials from both federal and state levels, development partners, traditional leaders, and members of the media.
