The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction has commenced the distribution of Presidential Emergency Food and Nutrition Assistance to vulnerable households in Adamawa State, targeting thousands of families affected by insurgency, displacement, flooding and climate-related shocks.
The intervention, flagged off in Yola on Tuesday, was led by the Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, as part of efforts to transition emergency relief into structured social protection and sustainable poverty-exit pathways.
Describing Adamawa as a state with complex humanitarian challenges, the minister said the initiative goes beyond immediate food distribution. He explained that beneficiaries would be integrated into the Ministry’s reform framework known as the One Humanitarian–One Poverty Response System (OHOPRS), which links households to conditional cash transfers, livelihood restoration programmes, skills acquisition, agricultural support and micro-enterprise financing.
According to him, 7,000 households covering approximately 35,000 individuals will receive food supplies under the programme. In addition, 13,000 malnourished children and 7,000 pregnant and breastfeeding mothers will benefit from Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), while Tom Brown supplements will be distributed to moderately malnourished children and mothers across the state.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who was represented at the event, described the intervention as timely and in alignment with the state government’s humanitarian priorities. He assured residents of transparent and equitable distribution of the relief materials.
Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Health and Focal Person on Nutrition conveyed the goodwill message of Vice President Kashim Shettima, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening food systems and improving nutrition outcomes nationwide.
The traditional institution, represented on behalf of the Lamido of Adamawa, pledged its support to ensure accountability and transparency at the community level throughout the distribution process.
As part of the ceremony, the minister conducted a symbolic handover of medical supplies to support healthcare delivery in the state.
The flag-off, officials said, underscored the Federal Government’s resolve to build a responsive, accountable and resilient humanitarian system that restores dignity, strengthened livelihoods and ensure that no Nigerian is left behind.
