The Federal Government has issued a one-month ultimatum to the contractor handling the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) office project in Abeokuta, Ogun State, to complete and make the facility functional.
The Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Kunle Salako, gave the directive on Thursday, February 12, 2026, during an unscheduled inspection visit to the abandoned NHIA building in Abeokuta. The visit followed a viral video on social media highlighting the deteriorating state of the facility.
During the on-the-spot assessment, Dr. Salako expressed concern over the prolonged abandonment of the building and its impact on effective health insurance service delivery in Ogun State. He stressed that the situation was unacceptable, particularly at a time when the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to expand access to affordable healthcare for Nigerians.
It was established during the inspection that the facility had not been formally handed over to management by the contractor. The minister consequently directed the contractor to fix all outstanding issues and ensure the building is fully functional within one month from February 12, 2026, to enable NHIA staff move in and commence full operations.
Dr. Salako reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to revitalising critical health infrastructure in line with ongoing reforms in the health sector. He warned that no public health asset should be left to waste, especially amid renewed efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare system.
He assured stakeholders that necessary steps would be taken to ensure the facility is put to productive use within the stipulated timeline, in the overall interest of residents of Ogun State.
