The Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to N77,000, with effect from March 2025.
The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, made the announcement on Thursday while addressing corps members at the Wuse and Garki Zonal Offices in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Brig.-Gen. Nafiu assured corps members that the scheme remains committed to their welfare, emphasizing that NYSC would continue to prioritize their well-being.
“With effect from March, you are going to receive the sum of Seventy-Seven Thousand Naira as your monthly allowance. NYSC is good at record-keeping, and I can assure you that your money will be paid. The Nation and the Scheme appreciate you,” he stated.
The increase followed the N430.7 billion allocation to the NYSC in the 2025 national budget, the highest in the past five years. Of this amount, N372.9 billion (86.5%) is earmarked for corps members’ allowances.
According to the budget proposal presented by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly in December 2024, NYSC is projected to spend approximately N307.6 billion on corps members’ allowances in 2025.
With an estimated 333,000 corps members mobilized annually, the total payment for each batch—mobilized in three streams (A, B, and C)—will amount to N25.64 billion per batch.
In response to the announcement, corps members expressed gratitude for the increment. Zaka Deborah Alheri (FC/24A/5831), speaking on behalf of her colleagues at Garki Zone, commended the NYSC leadership for ensuring prompt implementation of the allowance increase.
Brig.-Gen. Nafiu reaffirmed the importance of the NYSC scheme, describing it as a crucial platform for national unity, cultural exchange, and youth development. He urged corps members to remain disciplined, patriotic, and dedicated to their service year.
The allowance increase is expected to boost morale among corps members and improve their financial stability throughout their service year.
