The Federal Government has issued a safety advisory to Nigerians residing in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries following escalating military actions in the Middle East involving Israel, the United States and Iran.
In a press release issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the government said it is closely monitoring the rapidly evolving security situation triggered by reported military strikes against targets in Iran and subsequent retaliatory actions affecting parts of the Gulf region.
According to the statement signed by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the advisory became necessary due to heightened regional tensions and the risk of further escalation that could endanger foreign nationals, including Nigerians.
The Federal Government urged Nigerians currently living in or visiting Iran and affected Gulf countries to maintain a high level of vigilance and remain conscious of their surroundings at all times. Citizens were specifically advised to avoid strategic locations such as military facilities, government installations and other potential flashpoints.
The Ministry also strongly recommended limiting non-essential travel and movement within affected areas until the security situation stabilises, warning Nigerians to stay away from large gatherings and public demonstrations.
In addition, Nigerians were directed to strictly comply with security and safety instructions issued by host country authorities, stressed that cooperation with local law enforcement agencies is critical to personal safety during periods of heightened tension.
The government further encouraged citizens to rely only on credible information sources and official communication channels, cautioning against the spread or reliance on misinformation.
To enhance consular support, the Ministry disclosed that Nigerian embassies in Tehran and neighbouring Gulf countries including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have been placed on high alert to provide assistance and maintain communication with Nigerian nationals.
While assuring the public that the welfare and safety of Nigerians abroad remain a top priority, the Federal Government also called on all parties involved in the conflict to embrace dialogue and de-escalate tensions in the interest of global peace and coexistence.
The Ministry said it would continue to monitor developments and provide further updates as necessary.
