The Federal Government has directed an immediate halt to all enforcement actions relating to the proposed ban on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle products, pending the completion of consultations and the issuance of a final policy directive.
The order was issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) following concerns raised by the House of Representatives Committee on Food and Drugs Administration and Control over the planned enforcement by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
In a statement released on Monday, the Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Terrence Kuanum, said the OSGF received an official letter from the House Committee dated November 13, 2025. The correspondence, referenced NASS/10/HR/CT.53/77 and signed by the committee’s Deputy Chairman, Hon. Uchenna Harris Okonkwo, highlighted existing National Assembly resolutions on the matter.
According to the OSGF, the issues raised are currently under review in line with its statutory coordinating role as Chairman of the Cabinet Secretariat.
“Accordingly, all actions, decisions or enforcement measures relating to the proposed sachet alcohol ban are to be suspended pending the conclusion of consultations and the issuance of a final directive,” the statement said.
The OSGF further warned that any enforcement action taken by NAFDAC or other agencies without due clearance and resolution by the office would be considered invalid and should be disregarded by the public until an official decision is communicated.
The office assured Nigerians that it is reviewing legislative resolutions, economic implications, public health concerns and the broader national interest to ensure a balanced, lawful and well-coordinated outcome, added that the public would be informed once a final position is reached.
