The Federal Government has secured a landmark partnership with Coventry University to establish a campus in Nigeria, marking a major step toward expanding access to globally recognised education within the country.
The Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, noted that the initiative will see the UK institution set up operations in Alaro City, where Nigerian students can earn internationally accredited degrees without leaving the country.
Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, is currently in the United Kingdom alongside President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, engaging with university leaders, investors, and development partners to finalise modalities for the project.
According to the Ministry, the proposed campus will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM), Business, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Degrees awarded will be equivalent to those obtained in the UK, ensuring global recognition and competitiveness.
Admissions are projected to begin between the third and fourth quarters of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
Speaking on the development, Alausa said the initiative is designed to ease the financial burden on families while maintaining international standards. “We want Nigerian parents to enjoy their children being at home while still receiving a world-class UK education,” he stated.
The Federal Ministry of Education noted that the partnership, supported by the United Kingdom’s Department for Business and Trade, is part of broader efforts to strengthen skills development, boost graduate employability, and position Nigeria as a regional hub for knowledge and innovation.
