The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has been named the Grand Patron of the 2025 African Women’s Club Volleyball Championship, with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) team set to represent the nation in the tournament, scheduled to take place from April 1 to 14, 2025.
The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, presented the offer to the First Lady, commended her dedication to the advancement of women in sports.
“There is a popular saying that when a woman puts her hand to the plough, the earth itself will respond to her. All your initiatives and generosity are unparalleled, and this is a great source of inspiration to us all,” Adeniyi stated.
In response, Senator Tinubu expressed gratitude for the honor and encouraged seasoned Nigerian female athletes to mentor the younger generation.
“Share not just your stories of successes and achievements but also your humble beginnings,” she urged.
The championship will feature top volleyball clubs from 23 African countries, further solidifying Nigeria’s reputation as a key player in continental sports.
According to Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission, hosting the tournament highlights Nigeria’s commitment to fostering women’s sports and strengthening its presence in African volleyball.
With preparations in motion, the tournament is expected to be a major sporting spectacle, offering a platform for Nigeria Customs to showcase its strength on home soil.
