The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abuja has responded to circulating social media discussions regarding the death of Ms. Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, who tragically passed away on January 31, 2026, following a snake bite.
In a press statement, Dr. Bioku Muftau, Head of Clinical Services, expressed the hospital’s deepest condolences to the Nwagene family, acknowledging the pain of losing a loved one.
Dr. Muftau clarified that the FMC Abuja management team acted promptly upon Ms. Nwagene’s arrival. She received immediate treatment, including resuscitation, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and administration of polyvalent snake antivenom.
“After a thorough but rapid evaluation, it was clear that Ms. Nwagene suffered severe neurotoxic complications from the snake bite. Despite all efforts to stabilize her condition and transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment, she experienced a sudden deterioration just before the transfer,” the statement read. Medical staff carried out CPR and other life-saving measures, but were unable to revive her.
The hospital also addressed claims circulating online about alleged non-availability of anti-snake venom or inadequate response, called them “unfounded” and insisted they do not reflect the reality of the situation.
FMC Abuja urged the public to seek information from credible sources rather than relying on social media speculation, reaffirming its commitment to transparency, integrity, and excellence in patient care.
