The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, described him as a statesman of “uncommon integrity” whose life and leadership left an indelible mark on Nigeria and the African continent.
In an official condolence message, Ambassador Tuggar paid glowing tribute to the late President, highlighting his unwavering dedication to national service, both as a military officer and civilian leader. He described Buhari as a symbol of discipline, unity, and moral strength, noting his historic role in combating corruption and promoting national cohesion.
“When President Muhammadu Buhari spoke at his inauguration in 2015, he said: ‘I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody.’ He was not for sale, Nigeria was not for sale, Africa was not for sale,” Tuggar stated, emphasizing Buhari’s principled leadership and commitment to democratic values.
The Foreign Affairs Minister recounted Buhari’s instrumental role in the peaceful resolution of the 2016 electoral crisis in The Gambia, his support for liberation movements in South Africa and Namibia during the 1980s, and his active contribution to regional stability and integration through ECOWAS, the African Union, and the United Nations.
He further lauded Buhari’s foreign policy decisions rooted in national interest, citing landmark deals including military procurement from the United States, fertilizer imports from Russia, and the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline agreement.
“President Buhari was a soldier by training, a patriot by instinct, and a champion of democracy. Nigeria has lost a dedicated patriot; Africa has lost a noble son,” Tuggar said.
On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nigeria’s diplomatic community, the Minister extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, the Government and People of Nigeria, and all who mourn his passing.
He prayed for Almighty Allah (SWT) to forgive the late President’s shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.
