Former Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), Mr. Femi Soneye, has urged the Federal Government to introduce tax incentives and import duty reliefs to strengthen the Nigerian media industry.
Soneye made the call in Abuja on Tuesday after receiving the Excellence in Corporate Communications Award from the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council.
He noted that while the Nigerian media remained one of the most vibrant in Africa, it continue to face systemic challenges that undermined its effectiveness.
“The Nigerian media remains one of the most vibrant in Africa, but it also faces systemic challenges—financial, political, legal, and technological that weaken its effectiveness. The government can play a supportive role by granting tax incentives or relief on import duties for newsprint, broadcast equipment, and digital infrastructure,” he said.
Soneye further urged the Federal Government to establish an independent media development fund to support investigative journalism, community broadcasting, and newsroom innovation, citing examples from South Africa, the United States, and Canada.
According to him, such interventions would not only improve media sustainability but also strengthen democratic accountability in Nigeria.
The NUJ FCT Council stated that the award was in recognition of Soneye’s outstanding contributions to journalism and corporate communications, as well as his consistent advocacy for a free, strong, and sustainable Nigerian press.
Presenting the award, NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, described Soneye as a consummate professional who has distinguished himself with tact and excellence in communications practice.
“You have always stood with journalists, not only as a media owner but also as a practitioner who understands our struggles. Your advocacy for welfare, training, and ethical reporting has set you apart as an icon in this profession,” she said.
Comrade Ike further commended Soneye for consistently supporting the union and promoting balanced reporting, while also championing welfare initiatives for journalists both in Abuja and across the country.
The honour, she added, underscored the NUJ’s recognition of professionals who continue to advance media practice and uphold journalistic values in Nigeria.
