Deputy Superintendent of Customs (Pilot) Olanike Nafisat Balogun has made history as the first female pilot in the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), achieving a groundbreaking milestone in the aviation and public service sectors.
Balogun, who hail from Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State, began her career in 2002 as a Customs Assistant and cabin crew member in the NCS Airwing Unit. Her journey to the cockpit was fueled by unwavering determination, advanced academic pursuits, and institutional support from the NCS.
Reflecting on her career, Balogun revealed that her ambition to become a pilot kept her grounded in public service, even when many colleagues opted for private airline opportunities. “Staying in the Service when others left for better-paying jobs was challenging, but my commitment to public service and my dream kept me focused,” she said.
Her achievements included earning an Advanced Diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services, a Master’s in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, and securing her Pilot Certification from the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida, with full sponsorship by the NCS.
Balogun emphasized her dedication to inspiring women across Nigeria, saying, “Being the first female pilot in the Service reflects my commitment to pursuing my dreams and enhancing the operational capabilities of the NCS. I hope my journey motivates young Nigerians, especially women, to break barriers.”
The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, commended Balogun’s resilience and highlighted the Service’s commitment to fostering talent. “Her achievement is a testament to what can be accomplished with determination and institutional support,” he said.
Balogun’s historic feat who serve as a beacon of hope for women in aviation and public service, demonstrating the limitless possibilities of ambition and support.
