The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has commiserated with the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) over the tragic loss of journalists who died in a fatal road traffic crash involving a bus travelling from Yola to Gombe.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal said he received the news of the incident, which reportedly claimed the lives of six journalists, with profound grief, describing it as a devastating blow to the media family and the nation at large. He noted that the death of journalists whom he described as voices of truth and conscience under such circumstances is deeply painful and unacceptable.
The statement conveyed the FRSC’s heartfelt sympathy to the families, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased, while prayers were offered for the peaceful repose of their souls and the speedy recovery of those injured in the crash.
Shehu Mohammed affirmed the FRSC’s solidarity with the NUJ in this moment of immense sorrow, assuring that the Corps is closely monitoring developments in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to support emergency response and necessary follow-up actions.
The Corps Marshal further used the occasion to reiterate a strong call for strict adherence to road safety regulations, particularly on vehicle roadworthiness, tyre integrity and responsible speed management. He stressed that many road crashes remain preventable and urged motorists to cooperate with the FRSC in its mission to reduce carnage on Nigerian roads.
He added that the Corps remain committed to its mandate through sustained enforcement, public education and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to enhance road safety across the country.
