The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has commended the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force for their swift intervention following a mob attack on the RS5.12 Benin Toll Gate Unit Command Office along the Benin–Lagos Expressway.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, February 19, 2026, followed a rescue operation at a crash scene around the Benin Toll Gate axis, where two trucks reportedly collided. The accident claimed the life of one truck driver and left several FRSC personnel critically injured.
According to a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, one of the injured officers later died despite receiving urgent medical attention.
In the aftermath of the crash, an angry mob reportedly besieged and vandalised the FRSC Unit Command formation. However, the prompt response of security agencies helped restore order and prevented further escalation of violence.
Reacting to the development, the Corps Marshal condemned the attack on FRSC personnel and facilities, described the incident as regrettable and unacceptable. He stressed that operatives of the Corps were carrying out their lawful duty of saving lives when the tragedy occurred.
Mohammed also commiserated with the families of the deceased driver and the fallen officer, as well as the entire FRSC workforce affected by the incident.
He subsequently directed an immediate and comprehensive investigation into both the immediate and remote causes of the crash, including the circumstances that triggered the mob action, assuring that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The FRSC boss reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to ensuring safer roads nationwide and urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and supportive of the agency’s operations.
