The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced a targeted enforcement campaign tagged Operation Safe Kugbo to improve traffic flow and reduce road crashes involving articulated vehicles along the busy Kugbo outbound corridor in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The initiative follows a recent intervention by the Corps Marshal, who constituted a high-level tactical team to assess and address the persistent road traffic crashes along the AYA–Nyanya–Kugbo axis. Findings from that assessment informed the rollout of the new enforcement strategy.
The Corps said the operation, conceived at the national level and implemented locally by the Sector Commander, CC FN Theman, aligns with provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR), particularly Section 223, as well as existing FCT traffic laws. It also supports the Corps’ 2026 strategic goal of promoting safer road environments through proactive measures.
A key focus of the exercise is the restriction of articulated vehicles and heavy-duty trucks during peak traffic hours to ease congestion and minimise accident risks along the corridor.
On the first day of enforcement, Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the Unit Commander of RS7.13 Nyanya, CRC WF Luka, led a joint team drawn from RS7.1 FCT and RS7.13 Nyanya commands. The team, comprising eight officers and 22 marshals, supported by patrol vehicles and motorbikes, successfully restricted 89 articulated vehicles from operating during designated hours.
The operation recorded full compliance from motorists and transport stakeholders, with the FRSC commending drivers for their cooperation, which ensured a smooth and hitch-free exercise.
Reaffirming its commitment to data-driven and people-centred road safety strategies, the Corps urged all road users, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to adhere strictly to traffic regulations. It added that sustained enforcement under Operation Safe Kugbo would remain vital to ensuring safer and more efficient movement within the FCT.
