The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) successfully rescued 13 victims following a tragic tanker crash on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, which occurred on January 25, 2024, and claimed 18 lives.
The accident was caused by brake failure on a petroleum-laden tanker, which crashed into a water tanker, 15 other vehicles, and a tricycle. A massive fire ensued, engulfing 11 of the vehicles and resulting in the tragic deaths of 18 victims who were burned beyond recognition.
FRSC rescue teams, along with local authorities including Enugu State Governor Bar. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, the Commissioner for Transportation and Health, and the Enugu State Police Commissioner, participated in the operation. The rescue efforts led to the recovery of 13 survivors, 10 of whom were injured, while three were unharmed.
The FRSC has implemented traffic diversions to the inward Enugu lane as wreckage removal continues. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and exercise caution while traveling.
Meanwhile, the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, has extended condolences to the victims’ families and urged all drivers to prioritize vehicle maintenance to prevent such accidents in the future.
