Adamawa State Governor, Senator Mohammed Umar Jibrilla Bindow, has expressed shock over the death of former Vice President, Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme, who died in a London clinic on Sunday 19th November, 2017.
He described the sad event as a great loss not only to Ndigbo, but to Nigeria and Africa in general.
In a statement by the Special Assistant, Media and publicity to the governor, Macauley Hunohashi, the Governor was deeply saddened by the death of Dr Ekwueme. He said “it came at a time when his experience, wisdom and knowledge of governance would have been needed in the quest to move Nigeria to greater heights.”
Senator Jibrilla Bindow described the late Dr Ekwueme as an iconoclast who lived a simple and modest lifestyle, with love and fear of God as his watchword.
He prayed to God to grant late Dr Ekwueme eternal rest and his family the strenght to bear the irreparable loss.
The former Vice President, who turned 85 in October, reportedly collapsed in his Enugu residence few weeks ago.
He was immediately taken to Memfys Neurosurgion Hospital, Enugu, where he relapsed and went into a coma.
President Muhammadu Buhari subsequently directed that he should be immediately flown abroad for urgent medical treatment.
Born Octorber 21, 1932, Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme was Nigeria’s first elected vice President.
He served as deputy to President Shehu Shagari between 1979 and 1983
