As part of activities marking the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD), Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved N1 billion in soft loans for market women across the state to boost their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
Governor Okpebholo made the announcement while declaring open an event commemorating the global celebration at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, on Friday.
He lauded Edo women for their steadfastness, dedication, and contributions to the state’s development, stressing that his administration remains committed to empowering women and promoting gender inclusivity.
The Governor described women as vital partners in governance, noted that the soft loan initiative would strengthen their businesses and enhance economic growth.
“We can actually do nothing as men without the women, and that was why when a memo came before me on soft loan approval, I quickly approved N1 billion for our market women. The process is ongoing, and the money will be disbursed through relevant financial institutions,” Okpebholo said.
Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Edesili Anani Okpebholo, urged women not to allow their voices to be silenced, emphasizing the need for women to play active roles in their careers, communities, and society at large.
She commended the Governor for his commitment to promoting gender equality and called for collective action in breaking barriers that hinder women’s progress.
The celebration, themed “Accelerate Action,” was organized by the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development. It brought together women from different sectors to advocate for equal opportunities and women’s empowerment.
The International Women’s Day is observed annually on March 8 to celebrate women’s achievements and promote gender equality globally.
