In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has praised the bravery and sacrifice of the late Andrew Omotor, a firefighter who died in the line of duty.
Omotor lost his life while responding to a distress call, left behind a wife, six children, and an elderly mother.
Represented by Dr. Anthony Okungbowa, the Edo State Head of Service, the Governor led a delegation that included Queeneth Orobedo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Safety and Security; Hon. Jerry Idahosa, Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA); and Mr. Omoluru Osayande, Director of Edo State Fire Service. The team visited Omotor’s family in Benin City to convey the government’s condolences and support.
Dr. Okungbowa expressed the Governor’s deep sorrow over the tragic incident, describing Omotor as a dedicated and courageous firefighter. “Mr. Omotor responded selflessly to a call to save lives and properties but sadly lost his life in the process. His heroic actions will not be forgotten,” he stated.
The visit also highlighted the Governor’s commitment to supporting the bereaved family, with promises of further assistance to ease their burden during this difficult time. Another firefighter injured in the incident is currently receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
Governor Okpebholo assured the family of his personal visit to offer further comfort and pledged that the state government would take necessary steps to support them.
