Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of civil servants in the state, vowed to improve their working conditions and ensure they are well taken care of.
The Governor made this known on Friday while receiving the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State Chapter, at the Government House in Benin City. The delegation was led by the Acting State Chairman, Comrade Bernard Egwekhide.
The NLC executives visited to congratulate Governor Okpebholo on his recent victory at the Governorship Election Tribunal, which upheld his election in the September 21, 2024 poll.
Governor Okpebholo described his administration as worker-friendly and said the policies and actions of government are designed to make life better for Edo people, especially the workforce.
“Whatever we are doing, which is favouring Edo workers, is done because it is our responsibility as a government. Edo people voted for us to work for them, and that is what we are doing,” he said.
He noted that transparency remained a cornerstone of his administration and welcomed constructive criticism that will help his government serve the people better.
“The Renewed Hope agenda of the President has given us the platform to perform. We are focused on peace, unity, and inclusive development across the three senatorial districts of the state,” the Governor added.
In his remarks, Comrade Egwekhide praised the Governor’s performance and labour-friendly approach. He cited the prompt payment of the 13th-month salary, the increase in subvention to Ambrose Alli University from N41 million to N500 million, the regularization of casual workers, and the increase in monthly pension payments from N50 million to N1 billion.
He also disclosed that a committee has been set up to review the challenges around the compulsory pension scheme, added that a report would soon be submitted to the Governor for action.
In a related development, Governor Okpebholo also received the new Branch Controller of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Edo State, Mr. Apanke Utande, who paid a courtesy visit to the Government House.
The Governor urged the CBN to collaborate with the state government in efforts to improve the lives of Edo residents.
