Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has vowed to collaborate closely with traditional rulers across the state in efforts to address security challenges and other pressing issues at the grassroots level. The Governor made this commitment during a meeting with traditional rulers from Edo North, where he emphasized their crucial role in ensuring peace and maintaining order within their communities.
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed his commitment to working hand-in-hand with traditional rulers in the state to enhance internal security and tackle grassroots challenges. Speaking during a meeting with traditional rulers from Edo North, Governor Okpebholo acknowledged the importance of the royal fathers in preserving peace, noting that they were the first line of security officers in their communities.
“I congratulate you for coming to see me. It is the right step in the right direction because royal fathers are strong instruments for internal security,” Governor Okpebholo said, added that traditional leaders are well-acquainted with the people and activities within their communities, making them key to addressing security issues.
Governor Okpebholo also emphasized his administration’s respect for traditional institutions, citing his recent action of restoring the statutory rights of the Oba of Benin, a move he described as part of his efforts to correct the wrongs of the previous administration.
“We have started righting the wrongs of the immediate-past administration. Recently, we restored the statutory rights of the Oba of Benin Kingdom,” he stated.
The Governor reassured the traditional rulers that he would continue to seek their counsel and collaborate with them on security matters, particularly through regular meetings with local government chairmen to ensure progress in addressing concerns at the grassroots level.
In response, HRH Oba Idogu III, the Olokpe of Okpe, voiced his concerns about the previous administration’s treatment of traditional institutions, especially in Akoko-Edo. The Oba accused the past government of undermining traditional leadership by appointing village heads without following proper processes, a move he claimed caused significant harm to local governance.
Governor Okpebholo vowed to address these concerns and ensure that all actions taken under his administration would respect the dignity and authority of the traditional institutions. He also assured the traditional rulers that he would take appropriate measures to address any injustices that may have occurred in the past.
As part of his strategy for peace and security, Governor Okpebholo promised to work closely with the traditional rulers and involve them in decision-making processes, ensuring their valuable input in matters affecting the state.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment between the Governor and the traditional rulers to work collaboratively towards a peaceful and prosperous Edo State.
