The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has commended Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his approval and commitment to the ongoing construction of the permanent “Door of Return” project site in Badagry.
During her visit to the site on Wednesday, Dabiri-Erewa described the project as a landmark initiative with the potential to reconnect Nigeria with its African diaspora and promote cultural and heritage tourism on a global scale.
According to her, the project is not only symbolic of the historical return of descendants of Africans taken during the transatlantic slave trade but also represents a step towards healing, unity, and investment in cultural identity.
“This project represents healing, history, and homecoming. We are proud to be part of this initiative that resonates deeply with our diaspora brothers and sisters,” she said.
Dabiri-Erewa also praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for his visionary leadership in promoting diaspora engagement and boosting heritage tourism in Badagry, one of Nigeria’s most historically significant towns.
The “Door of Return” project, still under construction, is expected to serve as a major tourist attraction and cultural landmark, showcasing Nigeria’s role in the global movement for diaspora reconnection and investment.
Also present during the site visit was the member representing Badagry in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Solomon Sanu, who noted that the people of Badagry are eagerly anticipating the project’s completion.
“The entire Badagry community is looking forward to the commissioning of this monumental edifice, which will further place our town on the global tourism map,” he stated.
The “Door of Return” is part of broader efforts by NiDCOM and its partners to promote cultural diplomacy and create sustainable development opportunities through diaspora engagement.
