Former Head of State and founder of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), General Yakubu Gowon (GCFR), has applauded the management of the Scheme for upholding the vision that led to its establishment over five decades ago.
Speaking at his Asokoro residence in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the newly appointed NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, General Gowon recalled that the Scheme initially faced strong opposition from Nigerian students at its inception in 1973. However, he noted that it has since evolved into a widely accepted institution fostering national unity, integration, development, job creation, and youth empowerment.
Gowon commended the NYSC’s deployment policy, which allowed Corps Members to experience different cultures and geographical regions of Nigeria, enhancing inter-ethnic understanding. He acknowledged the immense contributions of Corps Members to national development and encouraged Brigadier General Nafiu to build on the achievements of his predecessors to propel the Scheme to greater heights.
In his remarks, Brigadier General Nafiu described the NYSC as a “divine project” that has significantly impacted the country and generations of Nigerian youths. He stated that his visit was to seek General Gowon’s blessings and mentorship, expressing gratitude for his continued fatherly support to the Scheme.
The NYSC was established in 1973 by the Gowon administration as part of post-civil war efforts aimed at fostering national reconciliation, reconstruction, and rehabilitation. Over the years, it has played a crucial role in promoting national cohesion and youth development across the country.
