In a groundbreaking moment for journalism in Nigeria, Ms. Grace Ike of Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN) has been elected as the first female Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council.The election, conducted under tight security, signified a turning point in the union’s 43-year history, with Grace promising innovative reforms to benefit members.
The election, held on Wednesday, also saw the emergence of other executives, including Mr. Yahaya Ndambabo of Voice of Nigeria (VON) as Vice Chairman, Comrade Jide Oyekunle of Independent Newspaper as Secretary, and Sandra Udeike of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) as Treasurer.
The unopposed election, conducted by the NUJ National Secretariat, attracted a large turnout of journalists across various media platforms in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The new Exco will lead the council for the next three years, with vacant positions to be filled through a bye-election.
Grace, the immediate past Chairperson of the House of Representatives Press Corps, described her election as a “new dawn” for FCT journalists, pledged to prioritize innovative projects and the welfare of members.
