The Democratic Front (TDF) has described the grand state reception accorded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by the government and people of Türkiye as a strong indication of deepening diplomatic, trade and security relations between both countries.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, the group expressed optimism that the visit would open new economic opportunities capable of improving Nigeria’s trade balance with the Eurasian nation.
According to TDF, the current balance of trade stands at about $2 billion in favour of Türkiye, a situation it said remains unfavourable to Nigeria despite Nigeria’s vast economic potential and natural endowments.
“We have always been disturbed that the trade balance between both countries has not favoured Nigeria, despite the country’s advantages in economic potential and natural endowments,” the group stated.
TDF, however, noted that President Tinubu’s business-driven approach to governance would strengthen trade partnerships and boost Nigeria’s exports to Türkiye.
The group added that the President’s visit has further enhanced Nigeria’s global image and prestige, especially in the light of ongoing economic reforms.
“In our opinion, the visit has opened a new vista in global recognition for Nigeria. We believe the country will leverage this opportunity to attain the new bilateral trade target of $5 billion,” it said.
The group also welcomed the security cooperation agreement signed between Nigeria and Türkiye during the visit, describing it as a timely step in the fight against terrorism and banditry.
It noted that the pact aligns with President Tinubu’s commitment, following the Nigeria–US security cooperation in December 2025, to continue seeking international partnerships to strengthen national security.
According to TDF, the joint resolve by both countries to deploy resources against terrorism in Nigeria and the Sahel region will reinforce ongoing security operations and improve the nation’s defence capacity.
Recalling the long-standing military and trade ties between Nigeria and Türkiye dating back to the Ottoman era, the group expressed confidence that the renewed partnership would yield positive results in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts.
“Tükiye’s involvement in Nigeria’s current security challenges will bring more successes and help consolidate national security,” the statement said.
TDF further stated that the strengthened partnership would place increased pressure on terrorists and criminal elements across the country, while also helping to correct negative narratives about insecurity in Nigeria.
The group concluded by urging the Federal Government to fully harness the benefits of the growing Nigeria–Türkiye relationship for economic growth, peace and sustainable development.
