A socio-cultural advocacy group, Guardians of One Nigeria (GON), has warned against the spread of fake news and politically motivated smear campaigns targeting key figures in the nation’s security architecture, particularly the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.
In a statement jointly signed by the group’s President, Arch. Darius Ishakwu, and Secretary General, Chief Nurudeen Isiaka, GON described as false and malicious the recent rumour circulating on social media alleging that President Bola Tinubu had sacked Minister Matawalle, Minister of Defence Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, and Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu.
The group noted that the rumour, which quoted a fake statement purportedly issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, lacked credibility and was not reported by any reputable media organization.
GON stated that playing politics with national security is dangerous and unpatriotic, stressed that the current administration is adopting strategic and tactical approaches to tackle insecurity across the country.
“No amount of propaganda or fake news can derail the President’s mission to restore peace and stability. Anyone who means well for Nigeria should support intelligence gathering, community policing, and homeland defence efforts,” the statement read.
The group also highlighted recent efforts by Matawalle and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, including an operational visit to troops in Borno State, where they were received by Governor Babagana Zulum.
“While enemies of the state were circulating fake news, Minister Matawalle and General Musa were on the frontlines engaging with troops. That’s the kind of leadership Nigeria needs,” the group added.
GON, made up of retired security personnel, paramilitary officers, and other professionals, affirmed its continued support for the Minister of State for Defence and the armed forces.
“Matawalle has demonstrated dedication and deserves commendation. We urge him not to be distracted. Nigeria’s security requires collective responsibility, not political mudslinging,” the statement concluded.
