Government Secondary School (GSS), Omu-Aran, Kwara State, will on Friday, July 4, 2025, host a grand event marking the Golden Jubilee celebration of its 1971–1975 alumni set, popularly known as the Gateway Set.
The anniversary, which mark 50 years since the graduation of the set, will feature a series of legacy projects donated to the school by the old students, as well as cultural and intellectual activities aimed at celebrating their contribution to education and national development.
According to a statement issued in Ilorin by the Chairman, Central Planning Committee, Professor Tajudeen Akanji, the anniversary celebration will commence with the launch and dedication of the legacy projects within the school premises. The Gateway Set will also pay a courtesy visit to His Royal Highness, the Olomu of Omu-Aran, and participate in a communal walk around the town.
Professor Akanji revealed that the Kwara State Government has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the alumni to upgrade identified infrastructure within the school.
A major highlight of the day will be a public lecture titled “National Development and the Imperative of Peace and Security”, to be delivered by Comrade Isa Aremu, Director General of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies, Ilorin. The school drama group will also stage a play titled “Flight Ticket” to entertain guests.
The event will be chaired by Major General Yemi Abidoye (rtd) and is expected to attract top dignitaries, including government representatives, royal fathers, and prominent old boys of the school who have made notable impacts in various fields.
Distinguished alumni expected at the celebration include Bishop Caleb Atolagbe; Alhaji Mufutaudeen Balogun, former MD of Harmony Securities; Dr. Dele Ige; Dr. Segun Dogunro; Dr. Depo Agboola; Engineers Kayode Adeoti, Dauda Awojobi, and Jacob Oyedepo; Navy Captain Yekini Mustafa; Chief Stephen Ayelabola; Mr. Tunji Oyinloye; Adegoke Olanrewaju; James Aina; Professor Funsho Afolayan; Professor Olabode Bamgbola; and Professor Tajudeen Akanji, among several others.
The Gateway Set has pledged its continued commitment to the development of their alma mater and the advancement of education in Kwara State.
