Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani-Bello has charged workers in hospitals in the state to imbibe maintenance and hygiene culture,
He warned that indolent workers would be flushed out from the state civil service.
The governor expressed concern at the non-challant attitude of civil servants to public facilities, especially the poor maintenance of healthcare facilities in the state ,during an unscheduled visit to the Maternal and Neonatal wing of the Minna ,General Hospital.
Governor Sani-Bello who decried the deplorable condition of the Maternal and Neonatal wing of the General Hospital Minna said the state Government would not tolerate the lackadaisical attitude of workers towards their job.
He however charged the hospital management to make hygiene a priority, adding that hygiene was very important to the living standard of the people.
“We don’t take care of our public property. I am highly disappointed with what I am seeing here today. Hygiene is paramount. If there is hygiene in our communities it will reduce cases ill health. If we can’t maintain healthy facilities in our cities only God knows what the rural area will look like?” the governor inquried.
He ordered the Commissioner for Health and Hospital Services, Dr. Jibrin Mustapha to sack anyone that is not ready to work. “Don’t mind their age, sack anyone that don’t want to work. It is not by force to work, you can go if you want to go”. He warned.
Governor Sani-Bello also expressed disappointment at the structural failure of the hospital, as he observed poor quality work on the facility, complaining that, “in the next two to three years only God knows what the structure would look like.”
He then requested the Hospital Management Board to forward to him the list of retired nurses, those who will be retiring between 2018 and 2019 as well as the number of workers needed to cover for the neonatal wing.
Chief Medical Director of the Maternal and Neonatal wing of the General Hospital Minna, Dr. Aminu Magaji who conducted the Governor round the ward explained that the hospital has been facing challenges in the area of manpower and roof leakages in some parts of the wards during raining seasons.
He then assured the Governor that the management would continue to do its best to ensure that facilities in the hospital are well taken care of.
